Description

A medical training project that simulates the caesarean section procedure in virtual reality, so that practitioners can learn and rehearse the steps in an immersive, risk-free environment.

Behind the scene

This is the project that eventually became Seede XR (opens in a new tab). In 2022 we were not a company — we were Team Mama, a group of close friends with very different skills: a medical expert, a full-stack developer, a product and UI designer, a Unity developer, and me as the 3D artist. We incorporated as a studio in 2024, two years after this project began.

I have worked on it across three years, as the simulation grew from a hackathon demo into a real product.

How it developed

  • 2022 — Demo. Created the pregnant woman 3D model in MakeHuman, then designed and animated the character in Blender for use in VR. Competing as Team Mama, the project won 1st place among African countries in the ARVRAfrica Hackathon 2022.
  • 2023 — MVP. Contributed environment props including scalpels, retractors and bedsheets, and continued character modelling and animation in MakeHuman and Blender.
  • 2024 — Update. Designed and modelled a new hospital environment to improve the realism and interactivity of the simulation.
