Description

An animated retelling of Matthew Chapter 1 — the first episode of a planned series. It follows the story from Joseph's perspective: the discovery, the fear, the dream, and the decision to obey.

The episode is built in seven scenes, with six weekly post-production passes layered on top: the opening flythrough of the world, Mary's reveal, the vine, the beam of light, the passing of three days, and the approach.

The six weekly passes

Week 1 — Building the World. The compound this website is built from: the same house, fence and meadow you walk through at /world.
Week 2 — Meet Mary. The blossom tree that stands at the centre of the compound, and in this world at the centre of the courtyard.
Week 3 — The Vine.
Week 4 — The Calling. A shaft of light finds the tree in the dark.
Week 5 — Three Days. The same tree carried through a day-and-night cycle.
Week 6 — The Approach.

Behind the scene

This is my most technically ambitious project so far, and the first where I stopped building scenes by hand.

Instead of modelling and animating everything manually, much of the episode is built by Python scripts that drive Blender directly — placing geometry, wiring materials, driving the camera and rendering passes. Once a scene is written as a script it can be rebuilt from scratch in minutes, which means a change to the story does not mean starting the shot again.

That approach is also what makes this website possible: the same pipeline that builds the film is what will compress this environment down small enough to walk through in a browser.
